Chapter 7

True to his word, Ross fetched the first round of drinks as they waited for the call to the restaurant. The bar area heaved with people done up to the nines, excited chatter and laughter in abundance.

Liam downed over half of his pint of lager in one go and gasped for air. ‘I needed that,’ he said to a stunned Amy.

‘Not sure need came into it but I’m glad you enjoyed it,’ she said, ‘you might want to curb your drinking though, this looks like the type of venue that doesn’t take kindly to drunken students.’ She glanced around at the works of art lining the wall and perched on marble columns, then her gaze reached the huge chandelier above them, crystal droplets twinkling. ‘This is so Downton Abbey,’ she muttered, enthralled by the affluence in one single space. ‘It’s another world.’

‘Isn’t it? Better get used to it, Ames, this could be your lifestyle in years to come,’ said Ross.

‘Maybe for you. I’d be too scared to move around, and just think of the cleaning this kind of place would need.’

‘Err, that’s what staff are for.’

‘Spoken like a true toff,’ said Liam, gripping his pint glass as black-and-white-clad waiting staff passed by with trays of champagne.

Amy giggled and placed a hand on Ross’s arm. ‘We still love you, though. Assuming we commoners are worthy of your friendship?’

Ross made a point of yawning, fanning his mouth with his hand. ‘Now you know why I never talk about my family.’

‘Aww, we’re only teasing.’ She toyed with a tendril of hair that had fallen loose, swaying slightly as her smile increased in size.

‘I know,’ Ross said, ‘let’s just park that subject and enjoy the rest of the evening.’ He pointed across the room. ‘Looks like feeding time has begun. Have you seen the menu?’

‘Have I seen the menu?’ said Liam, his effervescent chuckle causing his shoulders to shake. ‘I’ve memorised it. Come on then, I’m starving.’

The five-course meal and expensive wine made for a happy Liam, lulling him into a merry mood despite initially being flummoxed by the myriad of knives and forks laid out before him. Whispered advice from Ross soon quelled his panic and he settled back to enjoy every morsel offered. Afterwards, he retreated to a corner sofa while Amy and Ross headed to the dance floor when they recognised the first beats of “Gangnam Style” being played.

Breathless after another lively routine to “Despacito”, they joined Liam.

‘That was fun,’ said Amy. ‘Sure you don’t want to dance, Liam? I wasn’t expecting to enjoy myself quite so much. Thought it’d be a much more stuffy affair. It’s on a different scale to last year’s ball, but then again that was only for students, not rich donors like some of these guys. Still, they know how to throw a party. You sure I can’t tempt you?’

‘No thanks, I’m fine here’ he said, his mood thoughtful.

‘Another drink then?’ Ross asked.

‘Nah, don’t want a hangover tomorrow. Not when Flint or his sidekick turns up anyway.
